Understanding the Process: Safely Deleting Your Data from 23andMe - A Step-by-Step Guide

In today's digital age, safeguarding your personal information is essential. If you’re contemplating deleting your data from 23andMe due to privacy concerns or changing preferences, you're not alone. Step 3: Find 23andMe Data


Within your account settings, scroll down for options related to data management. You should see a section named "23andMe Data.” This section has important tools for handling your personal data. Click the "View" button.



After you have clicked on the "VIew" button you will be asked to provide your birthday for confirmation. Provider your birthday and click "Confirm."



Step 4: Review Options to Download Your Data Before Deletion


Before you finalize the deletion, take a moment to consider if you would like to download a copy of your data. You did pay for the service after all. There are numerous options on the page to consider. If you download your data just be sure to keep it safe!

Step 5: Submit Your Deletion Request


Once you have downloaded any data you would like to keep, submit your deletion request by scrolling to the bottom of the page and providing a brief explanation stating why you would like to delete your account. You can see my example below.


You will receive an email stating that your request has been processed. Make sure to check your inbox for this notification to stay updated on your data's status.



Step 6: E-mail Confirmation and Data Retention Period


After you've submitted your request, you receive an e-mail that is mean to verify that you originated the request. Once you receive the e-mail, click on "Permanently Delete All Records" as shown below. Note: You may be asked to log-in again.




Once you have logged back in you be presented with the following message.


Step 8: Verify Deletion


Give 23andMe some time to complete the deletion and then verify the process by trying to log in with your previous credentials. If you can't access your account, that means your data has been successfully deleted and your account closed. If after 24 hours you can still access your account you should reach out to 23andMe's customer care a the following link.
